Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
